  15. proven to be a tremendously helpful tool for administrators of AppleShare 3.0
  16. servers.

  18. Nok Nok A/S addresses important security, accounting and performance issues on
  19. AppleShare 3.0 servers. Hailed by network and Macintosh administrators as a
  20. vital complement to the newly enhanced AppleShare 3.0, Nok Nok A/S performs
  21. such functions as detailed logging of connections, disconnection of idle users,
  22. unmasking of guest users, and alerting administrators of connections as they
  23. occur. It is also the first commercially available product to use new
  24. AppleShare 3.0 services which let developers enhance and extend the
  25. functionality of AppleShare.

  27. Like its companion product - Nok Nok for System 7 File Sharing - Nok Nok A/S
  28. fills a gap many corporate and university departmental administrators have long
  29. pointed to. While file servers have become critical resources, AppleShare has
  30. not always kept up with the attendant security and accounting concerns. Nok Nok
  31. A/S addresses these issues in the following ways:

  34. Although AppleShare provides a simple and effective form of anonymous
  35. connection known as Guest access, administrators frequently can’t tell who in
  36. fact is using the server and whether they should be worried. Several Trik
  37. customers have reported catching roving snoopers connecting to major servers
  38. and abusing their guest privileges. Nok Nok A/S watches as guests connect to an
  39. AppleShare server and determines their actually identity. It can then alert the
  40. administrator or merely create an entry in the Nok Nok A/S log.

  42. • Accounting •
  43. Information on guests and registered users, including net and node addresses,
  44. machine names, originating zones, and duration of connection provides
  45. administrators with extremely useful accounting and security data. Because the
  46. log is maintained in an easily exportable format, information gathered by Nok
  47. Nok A/S can be used to track departmental and individual usage statistics for
  48. charge-backs and budgetary justification.

  50. • Performance •
  51. Nok Nok A/S enhances AppleShare 3.0 performance by letting administrators set
  52. automatic disconnections based on a user’s total connect time or idle time.
  53. Thus, users who intend to connect for a few minutes but then forget to
  54. disconnect are automatically disconnected. The result is an efficient server
  55. which can devote its processor time to users who need its services most.
  56. Furthermore, by massaging the data in the Nok Nok A/S log, administrators can
  57. determine peak usage times and plan equipment purchases before servers get
  58. overloaded.

  61. Trik also recently shipped its new utility called Lookout! which gives network
  62. administrators a quick glance at the security status of their AppleShare
  63. servers. By modifying the Chooser, Lookout! shows the user whether a server is
  64. an AppleShare, Personal Fileshare, or non-Mac server and whether guest access
  65. is enabled. In conjunction with Nok Nok A/S, it can also figure out the owner
  66. of the server.
